LINCOLN, NE (KETV/CNN) – Nebraska carried out its first execution in 21 years on Tuesday.
It was the state’s first lethal injection – but also the nation’s first death sentence carried out with the opioid fentanyl.
At 60, Carey Dean Moore spent more than half his life on death row after being sentenced to death for the killing of two cab drivers in Omaha in 1979.
The execution was carried out at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.
"The execution of Carey Dean Moore, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. today, was carried out pursuant to the order issued by the Nebraska Supreme Court on July 5, 2018,” Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes said.
“The first of the four substances were administered at 10:24 a.m. The Lancaster County coroner produced Moore’s time of death at 10:47 a.m."
The execution comes after the state briefly abolished capital punishment in 2015.
Voters reinstated it the following year.
