A 27-year-old man accused of causing a deadly crash on I-20 this weekend appeared in court Tuesday, September 4th before Judge Shepard at 2 p.m. and was denied bond.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said Jonathan Ewing Butler, of Hepzibah, was intoxicated when he caused the crash.
Witnesses and the investigators with the sheriff’s office say Butler was speeding in a 2009 BMW 328i along I-20 westbound near mile marker 198 when he hit the back of Vernon Faglier’s 2008 Nissan Frontier, according to the crash report. The report states the impact caused both vehicles to leave the road and enter the woods off the interstate.
Faglier was pronounced dead on the scene by the coroner. Butler was taken to a local hospital and then transported to jail.
Butler is charged with homicide by vehicle (felony), driving under the influence of alcohol, following too closely and driving too fast for conditions. He is being held in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center under a $1,680 bond, however, he also has a hold which prevents his release.
